Whale Watching Tips
Whale watching info
gladly shares these Whale Watching tips with you so you may better enjoy
your Whale Watching experience
What to wear
-
Bundle up! - It gets cold out
there on the ocean even on a warm and sunny day. With the moving
boat and the ocean breeze the chill factor can become unpleasant.
Layered clothing is best so you can start off light and add warmth as
needed. A simple sweatshirt or windbreaker may not be enough so be
prepared. Most Whale Watching boats will have a cabin you can go
inside but you will miss all the Whale Watching action.
-
Hats - A hat can be
protection from the sun for your skin and eyes. Do remember that
the wind can make it difficult to keep your hat on so make sure it's
secure if you don't want to lose it.
-
Ear protection - If you are
prone to ear aches from the cold or wind you might want to bring a
beanie, scarf or something to cover your ears.
-
Sunglasses - The sun and the
reflection off the water can create quite a glare. Polarized
sunglasses are excellent for Whale Watching but any sunglasses will be
helpful. Be sure to keep them securely on your person.
Dolphin don't need sunglasses! (speaking from personal experience)
-
Sunblock - A big YES!
When going Whale Watching put sun protection on any areas that will be
exposed but especially your face. The sun and reflection off the
water can cause quite a sunburn. Even on a cloudy or overcast day
you can get a sunburn. Don't forget to protect your lips too.
What to bring?
-
Camera/Video - Pictures are
fantastic and a lasting memory aid of your Whale Watching experience.
By all means snap some pictures but don't focus too hard on the photos
and miss all the fun. Keep in mind that you may possibly get
sprayed or splashed with water while Whale Watching.
-
Binoculars - Binoculars are a
good thing to have but can actually be very difficult to use on a moving
boat especially while you are standing. They are not a necessity
but if you have them bring them along.
-
Food & Beverages - Some Whale
Watching boats have an open galley and some do not. It's always a
good idea to bring your own bottled water or other beverages and snacks
on the trip. For half and full day Whale Watching trips you may
want to pack a lunch. Please be sure to keep all trash from
entering the water and endangering the sea life.
-
Change of clothes - Not a
necessity but a good thing to have. You can get wet while Whale
Watching especially if the seas are choppy. A spare pair of shoes
and socks left in the car wouldn't be a bad idea.
Motion sickness? Stop it
before it starts!
-
Ginger Ale - No joke, Ginger
Ale can both prevent and stop motion sickness. Sprite, 7up or
other sodas also help but Ginger Ale is generally lighter and less
sugary.
-
Motion sickness meds - If you
think you may get motion sick preventative medicines may be taken before
boarding. Dramamine and other such products should be taken about
one hour before Whale Watching. I've found it's best to eat before
taking them but everyone's body reacts differently. Check with
your doctor about the motion sickness patch or any possible
complications with other prescription medications if you are planning to
take any motion sickness meds.
-
Wrist bands - more info to
come
-
Natural motion sickness remedies
- Peppermint and Ginger tea are said to help motion sickness. Know
of any other natural remedies or other tips for sea sickness?
Please share.
-
Other factors - Typically
Whale Watching trips earlier in the day have calmer seas so you may want
to plan an early trip. Keeping your eye on the horizon is also
said to help with sea sickness and will also increase your chance of
spotting Whales, some Dolphin and other sea life.
